The first National American sport was horse racing, starting back in the 1700’s. The jockeys back then where mostly slaves and plantation owners had statues of them to promote the sport. One of the greatest was Isaac Burn Murphy,   who rode in the late 1800’s, and won 3   Kentucky Derbies along with many other wins. He was the first Jockey to be inducted in the  National Museum of Horse Racing Hall of Fame when it was created in 1955. To find out more about  these great riders who have been forgotten, there is a book  The Great Black Jockeys by Edward Hotaling that tells there story.   You can also google “Great Black Jockeys to see more of him and many others.

A serious effort is being made to encourage Blacks to once again play the game of  Baseball, like the days of old.

 

It’s Spring and a time when Basketball and Baseball meet. Which sport is the dominant or are they both appreciated by their fans. There was a time in the Black community when the barnstorming season featured the Harlem Globetrotters all winter, and the Indianapolis Clowns all summer. These two teams put on a great show as well as have great players. The first Black to sign a NBA contract with the New York Knicks was Sweet Water Clifton in 1950 a Globetrotter, after Jackie Robinson from the Negro Leagues first in Major League Baseball in 1947. Both these sports were loved in the Black community, and Wikipedia is one place to get more information on these teams.

This is a website that should be visited regularly by the Black community for its uplifting content. The view of Blacks in the millennium is full of change in a positive direction and must be told.
